Conventional Kidney Cancer Treatments

Surgery is usually the most practical kidney cancer treatment option. If the cancer is discovered early enough (Stage 1) a partial nephrectomy for kidney cancer would enable the removal of the affected cells. We are fortunate in that we are able to function with one kidney should the tumor necessitate the removal of the whole kidney. At later stages (stage 3) the lymph nodes around the kidney will have been affected so a radical nephrectomy would be the more likely route chosen by the medics. The adrenal gland is often taken along with the kidney when this operation is performed. The cancer may have spread further by metastasis. If this is the case more aggressive kidney cancer treatments should then be considered. Nephrectomy can often be performed by keyhole surgery.  

Other Kidney Cancer Treatment options are sometimes used, usually in conjunction with Surgery:

• Radiation Therapy   High energy radiation can be beamed to the cancer from outside the body. This is a non-invasive renal cancer treatment. 

• Embolization   Kidney cancer often causes bleeds. Embolisation is the injecting of jelly type substance to block bleeding. The gel forms a barrier.

• Chemotherapy   Often used with Immunotherapy, chemotherapy involves sending cancer attacking chemicals through the bloodstream. There is a constant number of new drugs for kidney cancer treatment.

• Immunotherapy (also known as Biological Therapy or Biotherapy)

This is the strengthening of the immune system by assisting it with more of the bodies natural defences to attack the cancer cells. These include Aldesleukin, Interferon Alpha and more recently Sorefanib and Sunitinib.

• Hormone Therapy   Not as effective as other therapies so not used often. Side effects can be weight gain, fluid retention, nausea, sleepless nights, indigestion. Hormone tablets are often medroxyprogesterone. Other kidney cancer treatment options are favoured.

• Anti-Angiogenic Therapy   Lots of exiting research is being carried out on this type of therapy in clinical trials. Scientists are studying the mutation of the genes and are very optimistic about this  kidney cancer treatment which targets the tumour blood vessels.

• Cryotherapy   This procedure involves killing cancer cells by inserting a freezing cold piece of apparatus into the tumour.

• H.I.F.U High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound.   This was used to kill cancer cells by heating them but there is evidence that disturbing the tumour cells and damaging their cell membranes can bring about a surge of our bodies' own natural defence mechanisms.

• Stem Cell Transplants   This involves using healthy cells from a healthy sibling donor. Lots of exciting research is going into new kidney cancer treatments and results seem
